The Yakushiyu & The Shinyu Gallery
The Yunotsu Yakushiyu onsen public baths (roughly translated as the ‘Apothecary Hot Spring’) has its origins in 1872 when an earthquake caused the subterranean hot springs to swell to ground level. The hot spring still flows constantly to this day and supplies all other baths in the area (other than Motoyu).

| The hot spring waters from Yakushiyu are widely regarded as having beneficial health properties. It was recently awarded the highest ranking by the Japan Spa Association for its hot spring quality and management. Only 11 facilities in Japan (including Yakushiyu) have been awarded this highest ranking.

(constructed in 1919). Its was originally used as public baths (what is now Yakushiyu) but it now currently houses an art gallery exhibiting the artwork of local school children and artists. It has received a lot of media attention in recent years as an example of bringing life and rejuvenation back to Yunotsu and especially rural Japan. The baths are open throughout the year between 5:00am and 9:00 pm and costs are \300 for adult and \150 for children. The gallery is open between 9:00 am and 9:00pm and admission is free.
